Altitude sickness medicines

Further Information

Altitude sickness medicines help prevent and manage the symptoms of altitude sickness, which can occur when travelling to high elevations too quickly. These symptoms may include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Medicines like Acetazolamide (Diamox) are commonly prescribed to speed up acclimatisation by reducing fluid buildup in the lungs and brain.

Acetazolamide is typically taken one to two days before ascending and continued during your time at high altitudes. It works best when combined with other measures, such as gradual ascent, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol. For severe cases, additional treatments may be required, such as oxygen therapy or descent to a lower altitude.
